Located in the Northern Caribbean where Caribbean waters mix with the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Cuba is located near the Bahamas and off the southern tip of Florida.
Discovered in 1492 during Columbus? first voyage, the tropical climate of this socialist republic has been the birthplace of distinct musical sounds such as rumba, salsa and mambo. Mixing indigenous Taino and Ciboney cultures with Spanish colonialism and African slave influences, the island is home to a rich cultural melange.
The aftermath of the Communist Revolution has poured over two million Cuban refugees to America, including notable luminaries in all fields such as singer-songwriter and queen of salsa Celia Cruz, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez and the political dynasty of the Diaz-Balart brothers.
